Do you remember when you were young and first became passionate about something? That was quite a feeling, wasn’t it? The Hub made it possible for 10 young women to experience that feeling, perhaps for the first time.
Last fall, in a partnership with the city, the Hub formed the Fashion Club. The club allowed those 10 young people to learn every aspect of the fashion business from design to procurement, manufacturing to promotion and accessorizing to marketing. The Hub bought 10 sewing machines and brought in experts in various aspects of the industry to share their knowledge. The kids met for 2+ hours late afternoon nearly every Tuesday throughout the school year.
They worked hard and gobbled up the knowledge and experiences. Part way through the school year they decided that the Tuesday time wasn’t enough, and voted to meet frequently on Saturdaymornings at The Hub. When was the last time you ever heard that happen?
The kids learned about how the fashion industry worked. Far more importantly they learned self-confidence. They have gained a sense of accomplishment. They experienced the connection between hard work, dedication and success. That’s priceless.
We’re coming down to the payoff. The Razzle Dazzle Fashion Show will take place at the Brannon Center on Sunday May 19 from 5-7pm. This will be a NYC style fashion show with seating straddling an elevated runway (the runway event itself will last about 40 minutes). Each of our junior designers will see two of their creations modeled by other students as the models strut down the runway to pulsing music. A radio DJ will host.
The Fashion Club is our most important new Outreach program. It has legs, but that potential will not be reached if Razzle Dazzle disappoints. We cannot let that happen. This isn’t about a fashion show—there are lots of those. It’s about supporting the positively-channeled passions of a group of our young people. Razzle Dazzle 2019 proceeds builds the war chest needed to expand the program next year. The Hub has a wonderful track record of taking a great program and making it even better in each successive year. We aim to do that again but we need your help.
Please support these young people and provide a base of support for next year’s new crop of designers by buying a ticket or 2 for Razzle Dazzle. Bring some friends. Talk it up. Tell the story. You’ll enjoy the fashion show but you’ll feel even better knowing that you helped make a difference in a young person’s life. Terry and I hope to see you there.
