The Sound of Music – Broadway at The Hub with Paul Marino
January 7, 2022, 5:15 pm - 9:00 pm
Date: Friday, January 7, 5:15-9pm
Rogers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music debuted on Broadway in 1959. Mary Martin, whose name was over the title, starred as Maria, with Theodore Bikel in the role of Captain von Trapp. The Sound of Music of course tells the story of a young potential nun, Maria, who in 1938 arrives at the Austrian home of the widowed von Trapp to act as governess to his 7 children. The Captain runs his house and family with military precision and discipline—a style most certainly at odds with young Maria. She gradually melts the discipline and the Captain’s heart. They wed and when von Trapp is pressed into Nazi military service, the family uses their singing act as cover to flee Austria to neutral Switzerland. The Sound of Music was nominated for 9 Tonys and won 5, including Best Musical.
We present the live performance that aired twice on NBC in December 2013. Carrie Underwood starred in the Maria role. Paul Marino will introduce the performance and lead a discussion of what we watched. Sponsor: Chases on the Beach – Where It’s Always Sunny.
