Old Kings is a country blues outfit based straight out of the salt swamps and sugar pine patches of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Sitting on a throne of primitive blues planks and Cadillac cushions, Robert “Top” Thomas, Billy Dean and Stephen Kampa kick the dust off a repertoire of forgotten songs which illuminates the life of a bygone era.
With a song collection that reaches back to 1900 and gets as close as 1973, Thomas and Dean look toward Leadbelly, Mance Lipscomb, Reverend Gary Davis, Robert Johnson, Nina Simone, and even Lynyrd Skynyrd for inspiration.
Old Kings exudes the brackish musical stylings of a rural art form headed to the Big City. Robert Thomas thumps out bass, rhythm and lead guitar, testing the limits of what’s possible with two claws. Billy Dean brushes, bips and bops behind the drum kit, evoking the rhythm and clanging of early farm machinery. Stephen Kampa is the 2012 Florida Harmonica Championships overall champion. His session work can be heard on Robert “Top” Thomas’s The Town Crier, Victor Wainwright’s Boom Town, and WildRoots Sessions Volume 1.
The trio paints a picture of the simple pastoral beauty and visceral pulse of modern music’s early roots.
If you hear a rumble and see a cloud of dust OLD KINGS IS NEAR!
