Come Out and Play?

Time that turned my beard white and wrinkles my brow has shaped memories. Memories spill out in texture and color. Details lie lost or broken in time’s abandoned. Hard lines separate loves and adventures of days gone bye. As my hand becomes tremor-ed and sight climbs the scales of dollar store glasses I find images in my head not so exhausting. Corroded faces of youth stare back from a time not so long ago. Images drawn like Sunday comics isolate images in my playground. Body settles as my mind still believes it can dance the night. Oh well …. Waves are good today, think I shall go to my studio and paint.

Terrence L Cope; Artist Statement

20 years managing Jerry’s Artarama and Pearl Art Stores in South Florida has given me a unique life-lesson on how to funnel my creativity. Materials I use are archival and quality, spare no expense.

Materials equate to numbers of a math problem, words in a dime novel. Terms like Brush Stroke, Pigment, Opaque, Transparent become the notes in the music we see. This to me is art. Materials are what excite me. Getting lost in the mixing of color while creating a fantasy. Colors that play with each other.

No matter how ‘in the weeds’ I may get on the way to the finished work my goal is to entertain, celebrate sight, a dance of hand and eye. There are so many images that cross our path that we often times don’t stop an appreciate. It is hoped one finds a place in one of my paintings to be entertained.

Terrence L Cope; Artist Bio

Currently my ‘wares’ are sold from the Downtown Art Gallery in Titusville. You’ll find my propensity for texture as a platform to play with color. My work for the gallery has me promoting many styles but texture allows a place for my mind to shake the shackles and loosen up. This group of paintings are fun and uniquely my own. A personal playground so to say.

I came to Florida in the mid-70’s where memories spill out on the canvas in fantasy-forms of urchin youths. Fond recollections of no work and all play. Days on the beach becoming one with the sea. Dissecting this happy time line was a marriage and  20 years working with art and artist in Boca Raton, Las Olas and Ft Lauderdale through art stores. There I learned archival mediums and tools, paints and pigments, and techniques. Sadly, Wife would leave but art would fill a void. My guess is being a muse is a tough line of work.

Schooled in Seattle for Bronze Sculpture, spending informative years in New Orleans, introduced many creative ideas to my repertoire. My first love is oils. Acrylics came along and there were many exciting adventures when exploring mediums and additives but I always came back to oils. Then came the pastes and textured surface coats and life was good.

My list of awards include local ribbons and won first in the last Birding Festival show. Also received first prize from the North Brevard Spring Art Show. Enjoy Impressionism and you can find me doing Plain Air Painting to promote businesses or events. I laugh that my true claim to fame is the electrical box by the KFC is my work. A mural on the old post office, painting hanging in city hall; people don’t know me but when they see my work I become famous. (Still waiting for the fortune.) Relive my youth in texture and paint. Have fun, sit back and enjoy.
