Date: Friday, March 4, 5:15-9pm
Cats started the mega musical phenomenon. The black t-shirt with cat eyes and the word “CATS” was everywhere from 1982 through 1985. Based on T.S. Eliot’s 1939 poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats burst onto the theatre scene in London on May 11, 1981. The Broadway debut at the Winter Garden Theatre came 17 months later on October 7, 1982 and the show’s run ultimately lasted 18 years and 7485 performances. The sung-through musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called Jellicles and the night each year they choose the cat that will ascend to the Heaviside and come back to a new life.
We present a 1998-filmed performance that was stitched together from 18 evenings of Cats presented in August 1997 at the Adelphi Theatre in London. Paul Marino will introduce the performance and lead a discussion of what we watched. Sponsor: Chases on the Beach – Where It’s Always Sunny.
