Art in the Form of Film: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
October 6, 5:45 pm - 9:00 pm
Date: Friday, October 6, 5:45-9pm
This film, set in rural America, puts on display the enormous acting talents of two young actors, Leonardo DiCaprio (who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar) and Johnny Depp. The plot revolves around teenager Gilbert (Depp), who following his father’s suicide, must now on his own take care of a morbidly obese mother and an intellectually disabled younger brother (DiCaprio). The tender-hearted Gilbert begins to emotionally unravel, caught between the needs of his dysfunctional family and his growing desire to leave and make a life for himself elsewhere. Instructor Paul Marino will introduce the film, raise questions to ponder and host a post-viewing discussion. Presented and sponsored by Cindy and Paul Marino
Fee: $10 includes glass of wine or bottle of beer.
