If ever you wondered who could have conjured up such a magical nanny as Mary Poppins, you will find the heartbreaking reason why in Saving Mr. Banks. We also learn how very close Mary Poppins (1964), one of Disney’s most endearing favorites, came to never being made. Tom Hanks plays Walt and Emma Thompson is the persnickety author who opposes, for personal reasons, the inclusion of any whimsical music or animation in the story.
