The title of this film may be confusing. Does fastest Indian refer to a track star from the subcontinent, or perhaps a swift-footed Native American? Not even close. The Indian is an American motorcycle brand (that disappeared for a time and then reappeared) and the film is based on the true-life story of an aging New Zealander named Burt Munro, played by Anthony Hopkins. With his home-tweaked 1920 Indian bike, Munro scrapes together enough money to travel to the salt flats of Utah during the 1960s to break the World’s land speed record. Showcasing once again his amazing acting range, Hopkins plays the financially challenged Munro with equal parts humorous likeability, serious determination, and grace-under-pressure indomitability. Colorful incidental characters also make this film a fun one to watch. Instructor Paul Marino will introduce the film, raise questions to ponder and host a post-viewing discussion.
