In the genre of holiday films, this one stands out for no other reason than its stellar cast, which includes family matriarch Diane Keaton, son Dermot Mulroney, girlfriend of son Sarah Jessica Parker, and sister of girlfriend Claire Danes. But another good reason for its success is that main characters are allowed to grow to the point that those intensely disliked in the film’s beginning are cheered for by its end. Not a huge hit at the time of its release, The Family Stone has since become a sleeper hit and favorite to watch at Christmastime. The plot centers on a loving but slightly dysfunctional family whose individual members and various outsiders clash after a cascade of mishaps and misunderstandings. While The Family Stone never descends into slapstick comedy, it is often funny, and while it manages to avoid sentimentality, it often tugs at the heartstrings.
Instructor Paul Marino will introduce the film, raise questions to ponder and host a post-viewing discussion.
