Welcome to “Patrick Paints Florida”.

The paintings on view represent the Florida I love and care about. The art seen will reflect a more simple time and life style without road congestion and overdevelopment.  This is the Florida in which I grew up.

Patrick  Rausch

I was born in West Palm Beach, Florida when it still had a small town flavor.  My surroundings were tropical and ocean settings. Numerous  visits since childhood  to the Florida Keys and years of diving and sailing the Florida coast and Bahamas along with having a home in the Ocala National Forest for a number of years  has had a strong and lasting influence on the subjects I chooses to paint.

From beautiful cloud formations at sunset, to a quaint cottage in the Keys, to tranquil back country landscapes, to soothing seascapes, I try to capture a feeling that relates to the beauty around us which is often missed in the fast paced world we live in.

My art journey began in childhood with an irresistible desire to draw. This was followed by color pencil work which eventually led to oil paints. I use a limited pallet of six colors which helps creates more unity within a painting. By painting subjects that I am familiar with and that strike an inner emotion for me, I feel I can be more honest with my work.

I have been sharing what others have shared with me and teaching others to paint for over 10 years and currently live in New Smyrna Beach and teach classes at The Artist Workshop.

Painting as well as other forms of creating, such as music, place me in a special state of mind emotionally and bring me unmeasurable pleasure. My desire as an artist is to pass this same pleasure on to others through my painting and teaching. I have found that using a limited palette of six colors and painting Florida based subject matter greatly helps unite my art. Viewers will feel a sense of continuity during an exhibition. Over the years, Florida seascapes, Island style cottages, Florida’s outback landscapes, tropical plants and Florida wildlife have become some of my favorite subjects to paint. I have heard some artist and art critics say “realism in art is dead”. I disagree. Artists have to be honest with themselves. For this reason, painting in a representational style has always been my goal and style of choice. I want the viewer to want to be in one of my paintings and visually transport themselves to a special place in time. I feel that through my art, I am recreating that special moment in time and place that will last for many years. I strive to create good composition with a strong light source. Light gives everything shape and shadows add a wonderful abstract element to an otherwise representational piece. I paint using a traditional approach with oil paints which builds layer on top of layer.

As with most other artists, there have been many influences and factors in my life which have led me to paint what I paint. In my art journey, I have been influenced by many artists, most of them I will never meet . Realizing that I cannot take a lifetime of what I have learned with me, in recent years, I have become committed to teaching painting to others.
