ART EXHIBITION – October – What Lies Beneath – Carolyn Land

October 6, 2018 - October 30, 2018

What Lies Beneath: Geologic Abstracts are a group of paintings from my Circle of Life series which celebrates the natural function of the world: to change, grow, and evolve. It is a journey into what lies beneath the surface of the earth and pays homage to nature.  I wanted to get below the surface of the daily life, the seen and the unseen. The thought process moves through the corridors of time in our geologic history.  I use a variety of materials and mediums to create a textural surface to represent layers of time, to express the evolution of the earth.  They are then painted with acrylic paint, and sometimes embellished with found objects.

I have two things in my life that decompress me: nature and art, and the first fuels the second.  I can go outside and put my hand in the earth and it appears to pull the stress and angst from me. I feel the essence of life when I am digging in the soil, walking in the woods, standing in the water, feeling the wind on my face. These are what send me to my “Happy Place”, my studio, where I create.  Here the world is shut out and I am free to create, explore and interpret the world in a kinder and a more beautiful way.  When I get deeply involved in a project I go someplace so far from the everyday world, that it becomes a form of meditation
