Moving into Abstraction

My artistic journey began with Realism and progressed into Abstraction. When I was young and first learning to draw, I was never satisfied with my work unless it was photo-realistic. Every detail had to be included. Years later, while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, I learned by copying and training my hand and eye to work together to produce an exact duplicate of my subject!

Someone said you must learn the rules before you can break the rules. I certainly agree. I always loved color – and even green appealed to me. I took a workshop with landscape painter Rodger Bechtold, who had studied with Wolf Kahn (known for his combination of Realism and Color Field). Bechtold taught me about color equivalents. With this new permission I could have blue or red grass (as long as it was the same value) and I could use color to express what I felt at any particular moment while painting.

Fast forward to today. Now, I experiment not just with color, but also with line and texture to create abstract intuitive paintings.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is a very serendipitous process which continues to evolve. Currently I am exploring the process of abstract intuitive painting. If I had a name for my art it would be Contemporary Art in which I use abstraction in various degrees. Some paintings are easily read as Landscape while others just explore Color, Shape, Line & Texture. I use water media and a variety of materials including, pencil, crayon, paper collage, and mediums.

Paintings begin with me standing in front of a blank canvas, picking up a brush filled with whatever color has excited me. My soul is free to explore. It’s totally creative and you never know what it will end up looking like. I love it.

BIOGRAPHY

I have been making drawings and paintings since grade school and I am not finished exploring yet.

I majored in Fine Art and English in college but worked for 35 years in the world of electronics. While working I made time to teach art classes in the Park Districts and later when I retired I did workshops in the Chicagoland area and suburbs. In 2005 I started doing Art Fairs around the Midwest. Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. In 2014 we decided to buy a home in Ormond Beach, Florida.
