LK Phipps Exhibition
Some photographic artists work long and hard to capture just the right image. For others, like LK Phipps, the raw image is often just the beginning of her artistic journey. Digital printing, hand-finishing techniques and various image filters are LK’s tools to create a finished product.
LK has always been fascinated by the cosmos, and the imagery of space often finds its way into her work. This is a fertile backdrop for her creative techniques and when combined with the psychedelic pop influences of her youth, the product frequently takes on a mystical and ethereal quality. Welcome to the surreal world of LK Phipps.
Artist Statement LK Phipps
My images begin with a photograph that I have taken in the RAW format. I then produce multiple layers with various filters and effects applied. I paint the effects in and out from the various components of the image. I will often add layers created by using custom made brushes and a Wacom tablet and stylus, to create unique artwork imagery.
Occasionally I find an image that stands alone in conveying a feeling of mystery, wonder or comfort. I honor those images by doing only the necessary editing to bring a RAW image to the printable platform.
I am inspired by nature, the cosmos, movement and light. Living in a little piece of paradise with the Space Program, that is close to a natural beach and wildlife sanctuary as well as Daytona Beach with Bike Week, car and motorcycle racing, fuels my imagination. I also entertain myself late at night with abstract imagery and digital artwork created using compositions of digital painting, illustrations and photography.
Much of my digital work is influenced by the psychedelic pop culture images of my childhood. Using richly saturated colors with an emphasis on luminosity I am able to create a somewhat surreal image.
I want the viewer to look at my work and wonder where these magical places, beings and things are.
Artist Bio LKPhipps
I moved to the Space Coast of Florida as a child, before the first lunar launch and remained until shortly before the lunar missions stopped. For a short period of time I moved around Florida with my family, only to rush back as soon as I graduated from high school. I have lived here ever since enjoying the benefits of living in such a beautiful, natural environment with occasional bursts of rocket fire.
My formal training began with film in the darkroom. Now, I am working with digital imagery. I feel the same magic come alive when I open an image in Photoshop as I did while working in the darkroom.
