Appropriate for children aged 7-100. This will be a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season. Space is limited.
Details will be available at www.theHUBoncanal.org.
Ebenezer Scrooge has no use for Christmas, feeling it’s a waste of time and money. Scrooge hates Christmas cheer, warm wishes and most of all, the spirit of giving. He cares for no one, and no one cares for him. Then, on a foggy cold Christmas Eve night, Scrooge encounters the frightening presence of his dead partner, Jacob Marley, who forecasts three ghostly visits. The miser relives his past, looks at the present and is horrified by the future. In presenting this timeless tale, McElroy brings to wondrous life all of the characters of the Charles Dickens’ classic, including Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, Marley, The Three Ghosts and Ebenezer Scrooge. This solo interpretation is for both adults and children, which will delight and dazzle the audience!
Matt Palm of Orlando Sentinel: “The tale is told briskly in about 70 minutes. McElroy enacts all the characters, and of course Scrooge is the center of attention. But minor characters get their due: Surprisingly fun are the two gentlemen who approach Scrooge collecting for charity. Also part of the fun is the setting – groups of friends camped out at Stardust’s tables, drinking wine, having dinner. It’s like being at a holiday party where someone – McElroy – decides to stand up and tell a story. Audience interaction adds to the idea we’re all celebrating together.
Charles F. Gauze of Ink 19: “There are a lot of folks inhabiting this Dickens classic short story, and it’s no small feat for one man to cover them all, male and female, old and young, alive or dead. It’s even more of a challenge with dinner being served and adjacent rooms holding their own moments of holiday cheer, but that’s no problem for the multi-voiced, multi-talented David McElroy. As he bounces around the atmospheric and literary confines of Chapters Book Store (a place where reading at the dinner table is encouraged), harassing the patrons and checking under tables for spirits, he does succeed in fitting everyone in with no confusion. Long conversation between multiple characters never lose their place, and even the silent staring of the dreaded Ghost of Christmas Future doesn’t get lost in his capable hands.”
Josh Garrick of Florida Culture: “David McElroy plays ALL 37 characters in his one-man presentation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. In the tradition of the ancient story-teller, a look, a voice, a posture brings forth each character from Tiny Tim to the Three Ghosts – fascinating as the multi-talented Mr. McElroy goes forward sometimes changing characters without even taking a breath. This HIGHLY RECOMMENDED tour-de-force performance!”
