Marilyn White

Decorative Painting

I was born and raised in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area.  Originally I designed and built Victorian style doll houses using photographs I had taken in New England of beautiful old houses for reference.  These I sold in various shops in the Main Line area.

In the late 70’s through the 80’s I became a student of calligraphy, studying under the highly respected tutor Deborah Kaplan, and was a member of the Philadelphia Calligraphers Society. By commission I designed works of meaningful poetry or prose for clients. At the same time I was studying with a decorative artist, painting walls and furniture.

On arriving in New Smyrna Beach in 1994, I further studied decorative art and began watercolor with Marilyn Dove.  Later I continued watercolor for many years with watercolorist John O’Brien of the Artist’s Workshop and studied acrylic and oil painting with many fine instructors through classes and workshops there.  Additionally I studied oil painting with Peggy Everett in St. Simons, Georgia.

Although I love watercolor, currently I am working primarily in acrylic.  I enjoy illustration art and at the moment am excited about working on some “pin-up art” in the 1920’s – 1940’s style.
Painting animals, particularly birds, on furniture, or on almost any wooden piece, especially old boxes or trunks, little benches, old boards and even wood shingles is another great pleasure for me.

My creative interests are diverse and every new direction is great fun for me.  Stay tuned!
