Eliza MidgettUnconventional Beachscapes [email protected]
Growing up amongst the rolling sand dunes and (literally) in the crashing waves of Virginia Beach has made those images so familiar to me that instinctively I paint the beach and its surroundings, but in my own way. Color has always been a part of my life, and has become a part of who I am. Even before I could draw, I performed the “Purple Dance” for my parents, and other dances in every color of the rainbow, matching the mood of the music with my feelings about each color. My fascination with color lured me towards studying the psychology, marketing and interior design facets of color as well as using it as a powerful tool to communicate artistically. Now, as I paint in my home of New Smyrna Beach, I continue to explore the joy of color. Viewing the world in chunks of color, shadows, exaggerated shapes and patterns, I transform nature into my own surreal wonderland devoid of the somber grayness of the real world. On my canvases, organically twisting black lines divide a sea of tropical colors, akin to mosaics. I tend to “escape” into my paintings while I am working on them and imagine what it would be like to live inside each painting. I invite you to jump in!
