Photography Exhibition – August – Rick de Yampert – Mr. Crow Saves the Universe
September 16, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Mr. Crow Saves the Universe
Rick de Yampert will present his gallery talk “Crows and Ravens: Birds of Myth and Magic” from 1 to 2 pm Wednesday, August 7 at the Fine Art Photography Gallery at The Hub, 120 Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach, Florida. His exhibition “Mr. Crow Saves the Universe” will be on display from July 6 through September 29. Opening reception is 4-7 pm, Saturday, August 3.
Admission to the talk and exhibit are free.
Rick’s artist talk will explore how the religions, myths and legends of many cultures have included crow and raven lore.
In Norse mythology, the god Odin is accompanied by two ravens whose names translate as “thought” and “memory.” In Celtic mythology, the Morrigan is a battle goddess who often appears in the form of a crow or raven, or is accompanied by them. For some Native American cultures, Raven is a trickster god who stole light and brought it to the world. In Jewish folklore and the Qur’an, a raven teaches humans how to bury Abel. Crows and ravens also appear in the legends of Greek, Appalachian and numerous other cultures.
Rick’s book “Crows and Ravens: Birds of Myth and Magic” will be published by Llewellyn in 2020.
