The artwork is this exhibit is reflections of recent travels and cultural events. It represents experiences of openness and reactions to witnessing new and surprising occurrences.
Sometimes when creating these pictures, marks or images would appear giving new direction to the composition. Often, I followed the impulse to change and was happier with the new direction it took.
Painting and manipulating paper then composing a picture gives me a feeling of being totally creative. It is a dimension above the Commercial Art which I studied, and the Realism courses I took, when learning to master oil, watercolor and acrylics. Warm memories of nestling by the fireside with my grandmother, sitting with my mother and sisters while learning to knit, crochet or sew a doll dress, or whittling with my father or brother, flood over me as I get lost in my artwork. They also stir up an innate drive to create using a tactile technique. My pictures reflect personal messages, moods and stored thoughts which I wish to share with the viewer. I find collaging and de `collaging in this minimalistic, non-representational style very exciting and fulfilling.
For this exhibit I’ve chosen a selection of colored pencil paintings and hand-colored intaglio etchings. The colored pencil art is done on Arches hot pressed watercolor paper using several layers of color and varying amounts of pressure to create a more painterly appearance.
My etchings are done on both zinc and copper plates using a combination of dry point, aquatint and acid bathing techniques.
No matter what medium I’m using, the common thread in all my work is always the natural world.
The inspiration for my art has always come from nature with its constant energy and infinitely changing moods and colors. I find myself repeatedly drawn to that energy and I hope the feeling it evokes in me will be conveyed through my work.
